WCBS Newsradio 880 signs off this weekend, after nearly 90 years on the air, including all-news since 1967. Station owner Audacy is leasing the airtime to ESPN sports programming, and they're even dropping the iconic WCBS call letters.
Yes, New York has another all-news station -- WINS, also owned by Audacy -- but I've always preferred the CBS format, which went into stories in a bit more depth than WINS' 'give is 22 minutes, we'll give you the world" format.
An on the TV side, WCBS-TV Channel 2 is dropping the 9 a.m. local newscast hosted by Cindy Hsu. It's being replaced by an expanded version of the Drew Barrymore Show. Cindy's show will still be on the CBS News streaming site, but no longer on the air. Her last broadcast was this morning, and as she and weatherman John Elliott were saying their goodbyes, they got cut off mid-sentence by a commercial and that was it.
