Folio reports that new magazine launches in this year just ending outnumbered magazines shutting down by 3 to 1.
There were 185 magazines launched this year, down 18 percent from a year ago. But the number of closures this year fell by 30 percent from 2012 and by 60 percent from 2011.
The top categories for new magazines were food (12 percent of the total), regional (9 percent) and women's interests (7 percent). The biggest number of closures this year came from the sports catgory.
In the business-to-business category, 20 magazines were started, while 14 were folded. In 2012, the b-tob numbers were 31 launches compared with 16 closures.
