Here are some items of note as we begin July with a midweek holiday.
Today, we celebrate a monumental anniversary.
Sixty-six years ago, on July 1, 1941, the first ad appeared on TV. It was a spot for watchmaker Bulova, and it aired on a station in New York. Very few people had television sets back then -- perhaps a few dozen people may have seen that first ad. The cost was $9. (I wonder what the CPM would have been.)
Compare that to the average cost of a few hundred thousand for a primetime network spot today, or to the record price of about $2.6 million, paid for a SuperBowl spot.
We've come a long way, although I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
Drew celebrates a milestone, again.
Drew McLellan's blog Drew's Marketing Minute hit 2,000 comments recently, and Drew asked the 2,000th, Roberta Rosenberg, to pen a post. I was the lucky 1,000th commenter, only 2 months ago. A thousand comments in 2 months! He must be doing something right. Way to go, Drew.
The Age of Conversation is coming soon.
The collaborative e-book spearheaded by Drew McLellan and Gavin Heaton is almost complete, and publication date has been set for July 16th. Prices for the book have been set at:
e-book: $9.99 ($7.99 going to charity)
paperback book: $16.95 ($8.10 to charity)
hardback book: $29.99 ($8.55 to charity)
Drew and Gavin have personally absorbed various set-up costs, so absolutely no one will make money from book sales, except for the charity Variety.
The goal of 100 authors has been exceeded, and the book will have essays by 104 authors from throughout the U.S. and several other nations. I'm pleased to say I'm one of them.
Drew, Gavin and others will be posting more info on the book as publication date gets closer.
